Hat Care - Tips for your Toppers

Hats of all types have been increasing in popularity over the past couple of years and we are here for it! From a pencil curl edge on a wide brim hat to a jaunty fascinator, boater, or gambler the styles truly can work for all eras and tastes.

Since hats can be an investment, or maybe a new accessory to some, we decided to put together some helpful tips to care for your hats.

Some best practices:

  • Keep your hat in a hatbox or roomy bag to avoid collecting dust and having it settle into the texture of your hat.
  • When not being worn, keep your hat on a flat surface or hang to keep the brim flat against the wall.
  • When not in use keep your hat in a cool and dry environment, avoiding prolonged exposure sunlight.
  • When traveling with a hat it is best to use a hat box to preserve the shape and structure.
Sometimes during shipment, travel, or general use hats crown (the top portion of the hat) and brim can become misshapen or bent. The great thing about hats is you can learn to care for them and become comfortable making adjustments to bring them back to their original condition. One of our favorite hat reshaping methods comes from @Vintage_Engineer_Boots!

 He recommends the following:

Tools:
  • Iron
  • Garment Steamer
  • Hand Towel / Face Towel

Flat Brim Hat

Lay flat on an ironing board, place the towel (fold twice depending on thickness) over a portion of the brim; using high steam level, iron a small portion at a time over the towel (using 8 segments -- 1 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 5 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 7 o'clock, 9 o'clock, 11 o'clock and 12 o'clock); Use slight pressure and a few passes over each segment. Once each segment is complete, allow the brim to cool down before wearing.

Pencil Curl Brim

Using a garment steamer or an iron (upright), hold the hat in a vertical position and steam the bottom portion of the brim -- do not allow the steamer/iron to touch the hat, but allow a significant amount of steam to penetrate the material. If necessary after steaming, place the hat flat on an ironing board and using a hand/face towel, massage the brim from the top side to "iron" out any wrinkles. Repeat steaming of the underside if required.

Straw Hats and Fascinators

The same steaming methods mentioned above can be used but make sure to be very careful if there are additional adornments or feathers.
